Although antidepressants don’t help reduce general low back pain, they do reduce specific nerve pain. This pain can come as a result of diabetes or pinched nerves in the spine. Both amitriptyline and Effexor (venlafaxine) did the best. Effexor (around $15 per month) has fewer side effects but costs a little more per month than amitriptyline ($4 per month) if you get the generic version.
